The Annunciation

First half of the 18th century
Church of St. Peter, Munich, Germany

Unusually, the sculpture places the angel on the right and Mary on the left. Mary is greeted while studying scripture, as in many medieval and later Annunciations. The stalk of lilies in the angel's left hand replaces the vase of lilies that is common in paintings of this subject. He points to Heaven, reflecting his words, "the power of the Most High will overshadow you" (Luke 1:35).
